Bob Ong, or Roberto Ong, is the pseudonym of a Filipino contemporary author known for using conversational Filipino to create humorous and reflective depictions of life as a Filipino. The six books he has published thus far have surpassed a quarter of a million copies.
Huling libro ni Bob Ong na binasa ko ngayong bakasyon. Kung hindi siya gagawa ng adyasment, huling libro na rin siguro na babasahin kong sinulat nya. O magdadalawang isip na siguro akong bumili at/o magbasa ng akda niya kung sumulat pa siya ng iba. Nakakasawa. Paulit-ulit lang ang tema. Halatang narating na niya ang hangganan ng mga paksang kaya niya sulatin. Pakiramdam ko, doon sa huling sinulat niya na lumabas noong nakaraang taon: Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan ay parang yong sinasabi ng mga Amerikano na he is already scraping the bottom. Balikan natin ang kanyang 8 nobela na kababasa ko lang lahat: ABNKKBSNPLAko?! (2001) - 2 stars - tungkol sa kuwento ng kanyang pagaaral mula sa elementary hanggang college. Outdated na. May parts na napangiti ako (pero di natawa). Naala-ala rin ang mga nakaraan ko sa public elementary school at private high school at college. Pero di kaaya-aya ang kanyang buhay na na drop-out or kick-out sa college at pagiging laging late. Ewan ko, hindi ako maka-relate! Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ang mga Pilipino? (2002) - 4 stars - ito ang nagustuhan ko. May kabuluhan. May adhikain si Bob Ong na imulat ang mga mata ng mga nagtutulug-tulugan na Pinoy. Nais din nyang magkaroon ng pagbabago at naniniwalang may pag-asa pa ang Pilipino. Very positive. Well-written except may mga fillers (yong kuwento ng mga bobo sa ibang bansa). Ang Paboritong Aklat ni Hudas (2003) - 1 star - Pangit. Kuwentong tagpi-tagpi na kuwanri ay isiningit sa paguusap ng kamamatay lang na karakter ni Bob Ong at ng Diyos. Napagkamalan pa ni Bob Ong ang Diyos na si Lucifer! Non-sense. Halatang gusto lang makapagsulat dahil kumita ang unang dalawang libro. Hit while the iron is hot siguro so na-suffer ang quality ng libro. Alamat ng Gubat (2003) - 4 stars - Pero ang pagkakamali sa Hudas ay agad naituwid noong ilabas sa parehong taon ang Alamat. Isang satire sa buhay ng Pinoy lalo na sa pulitika. Gustong-gusto ko ang karakter ng buhay ni Tong Talangka: masaya, matalinhaga, mapanganib at makahulugan. Tapos may mga illustrations pa si Klaro na makukuhay. Ang pintas ko lang ay bakit papaya ang drowing ng puso ng saging. Klasik na pagkakamali. At di rin prutas ang puso ng saging kundi bulaklak! Stainless Longganisa (2005) - 2 stars - Kung ang ABNKKBSNPLAko?! ay tungkol sa eskuwela at ang Baliktad ay tungkol sa pulitika, dito sa Stainless sinubukan nyang ikuwento ang buhay niya bilang manunulat. Masyadong self-centered na para bang siya na lang ng siya ang bida. Bakit naman ako magiging interesado sa kanya ganoong maraming mas di hamak na mahuhusay na nobelistang Pinoy at kahit hindi Pinoy. Pero in fairness, may mga natutunan ako sa kanya sa librong ito, kaya 2 stars (it's OK ayon sa definition). MacArthur (2007) - 3 stars - Siguro, wala na syang maisip na isulat tungkol sa buhay nya at uso ng mga panahong yon ang teleserye sa TV kaya nag-drama si Bob Ong. Mahusay naman. Malinis ang pagkakasulat at interesante ang plot. Nagustuhan ko ito kahit medyo gasgas na sa TV ang tema ng 4 na durugistang kabataan. Huwag na lang kontrahin ang mga nagsasabing nahulaan nila ang mangyayari ha ha. Kapitan Sino (2009) - 3 stars - Tapos nauso rin sa TV ang Darna, Dyesebel, Mulawin, atbp. kaya go with the flow rin si Bob Ong. Gumawa sya ng superhero na may local flavor at may patama sa buhay pulitika sa bansa. Nagustuhan ko rin ito dahil sa mga makahulugang mga pangungusap ng mga karakters lalong lalo na yong kay Rogelio at sa tatay niya si Ernesto. Ganda. and finally... Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan (2010) - 2 stars - Huwag na lang pagusapan. Baka lapangin ako ng mga tinatawag ng kaibigan kong mga Trolls Basta sana huwag na lang ulit sumulat si Bob Ong ng horror na kagaya nito. Ayan, sasabihin na naman ng kaibigan ko: Pati ako dinamay mo sa review mo Eh bakit di kita ida-damay eh involved ako sa argumento ninyo at iyan ang dahilan kung bakit naging curious ako kay Bob Ong (dahil self-declared fan ka niya) at ang mga tinatawag mong trolls ay ganoon na lang ang pagtatanggol sa Mama Susan na para bang si Bob Ong na ng maestro ng makabagong panitikang Pilipino ha ha. He is indeed scraping the bottom sa aking opinion. Matapos kung sunud-sunod na basahin lahat ng libro ni Bob Ong, ang aking final verdict: okay naman si Bob Ong bilang manunulat. Positibo sa intensyon pero medya-medya ang istilo. Walang kang isusuka pero wala ka ring kupkupkupi't hahangaan. Walang ikakamangha at sasabihin mong wow! Madaling basahin. May mga parteng nakakaaliw. Matatapos ko ba ang 8 libro (6 ang binili, 2 ang regalo) nya sa loob ng kulang sa 2 linggo (suma) kung di naman ako na-aliw bilang mambabasa?

He has the ability of adding a humorous twist to any dismal event in his life in school, adding metaphors and funny lines to liven the book. Towards the end of the volume, he turns sentimental and serious, citing many things about school and life in general. In closing, he relates a visit to his alma mater—his reminiscing of years bygone, of events that have become nothing but memories. He says something like, I've revisited the place, but not the times. Since it is written in Filipino, foreigners will not find much humor in this book unless they have at least basic command in our language. However, Pinoys everywhere must have this book in their collection. Entertaining, perhaps desirous read worthy of your time.
I remember I was depressed when I was reading this... I felt back then that everything wasn't working for me. So I went to the bookstore and looked for a book that could possibly make me laugh. I chose this book because it was the book that most of my classmates have already read and enjoyed. After reading a few pages, I find his anecdotes and descriptions amusing. I was pausing to laugh at each page. I can relate to him and it made me feel good. I think every Filipino middle-class will find familiarity to Bob Ong's books. Anyway, I never thought I would also find it inspiring. Bob Ong was criticizing our society, but in a satirical manner. You laugh while thinking, Yes, happened to me as well. But in the back of your mind, you thought that, it was so wrong. There are so many things we can learn from this book, which I think every Filipino must read. It influenced my perspective of how I look at life, education, happiness, success and my country.
